daVinci’s Story

I had a rocky beginning. I was found wandering on a reservation in Montana and was facing a firing squad. Some nice human saw my plight and told the officer not to shoot me and they would see I found a forever home. Whoever that was, I thank them, because if not for them, I would never have ended up where I did.

That journey took me to a shelter in Anaconda, Montana, of all places. I was scared. Being closed up in a cage was not fun. I didn’t know this place or these people. I don’t know how long I was there, but one day a man and woman came in and the caretaker let me out of my cage along with some of my other fur buddies. The man sat down on a stool. There was something about him that drew me to him. Thus began the rest of my story with my new people.

The Rest of the Story

You’re probably wondering how I got my name. Somebody at the shelter tagged me with Marshall. Marshall??? What kind of dog’s name is that? I hated it and wouldn’t answer to it. When I first went to my forever home, I would spend hours laying with my new mom in some room she called an art studio. She would talk to me and I would listen but I wouldn’t answer to Marshall. She figured out I didn’t like that name so started to try out different names…lots of them. For some reason when she said daVinci I responded, I sat up wagging my tail. I don’t know who daVinci was, but I liked the sound and that’s what everyone called me from then on.

For a long time the man would take me everywhere with him. I loved riding in his big truck - a ‘man’s truck,’ big, powerful, and loud. Everyone could hear us coming! He would take me to the park and throw my frisbee along with my fur-sister, Goldie. (She was a little pain in the butt sometimes, but I loved her.) She was my cheerleader, cheering me on while I chased that wonderful frisbee.

I had everyone trained to throw that frisbee for me when they would come visiting. And, all the delivery people were trained to bring me a treat and a scratch behind the ear.

Life was good. I went everywhere with my humans. I watched over them. Gave them love. Was there when they needed a hug. I spent a lot of time in the studio keeping my mom company and giving her comfort after my dad went away.

I crossed the rainbow bridge in January 2022 and am happily chasing my frisbee. My mom renamed her studio in my honor and I still lay beside her in spirit, loving her and comforting her while she creates her art.

Yes, daVinci, you are still with me every day! You inspire me to be happy, loving, and forgiving. Rest in peace my friend. Rest in peace!
